How to Have Fun with Your Colleagues

Read Time:5 Minute, 13 Second

You spend a lot of your time during the week at work, which is why it is important to get on with your colleagues. Not only does this help to make the working environment more pleasant for everyone, but it’s also a great opportunity to make true friendships that will last a lifetime. If you can sense that morale has been a little low lately in your office, or you want to start bonding with your colleagues better, here are some ideas for how you can all start having more fun with each other.

Talk to Each Other

The first thing you need to do if you want to create a happier, more fun working environment is to improve the overall communication between colleagues. Ask your peers how their weekend was, and take an interest in who they are. Some people might be more willing to engage with you than others, but breaking the ice is key if you want everyone to have a good time and bond with each other. The more you learn about your colleagues, the more in common you might find that you have with each other.

Arrange After-work Drinks

A good way for everyone to get to know each other better and let their hair down is by going for a drink after work on a Friday. While you want to make sure you don’t drink too much, this casual environment can make it easier for people to talk and relax. You could even play a game of pool or another bar game for some extra entertainment, perhaps even starting a friendly competition amongst your peers.

Get Involved in Sweepstakes

Another way a lot of colleagues have fun with each other is all by playing the lottery together or perhaps putting small bets on sports events. Of course, it is important to make sure that people aren’t getting carried away, but this can be fun and help people bond. You could even look at suggesting your colleagues try the Valpak Sweepstakes together, seeing who could win an exciting cash price – after-work drinks on them, right?

Introduce Games into the Break Room

Having some board games, a ping-pong table, or even a pool table in the break room can be a good way to help people bond at work as well. Again, this can create the opportunity for friendly competition and help them switch off from work during their lunch hours. It can also help people find common ground, particularly if they are both a fan of a certain game. You never know, this could lead to arranged game nights out of the office and enable people to forge friendships that go beyond the working environment.

Novelty Award Ceremony at the Christmas Party

Office Christmas parties are a great opportunity to have some fun, and by curating a novelty staff award ceremony, you could make it even more enjoyable. Of course, be kind as you don’t want anyone to feel singled out or bullied, but being able to poke a little fun at one another is a good way to bond and have a good time.

Arrange a Staff Day Out

After-work drinks is a great way to bond with your colleagues, and it is relatively easy to organize, but asking if people would like to go on a fun day out on Saturday or Sunday could also be beneficial for team bonding. There are a lot of activities you can take part in, for example, visiting a theme park or booking time for an outdoor activity like rock climbing or canoeing. There are even companies that run fun obstacle courses through the tree-tops in forests that can be a great mix of getting into nature and an adrenaline rush. A lot of these companies will also offer deals on larger groups, so it is worth asking around and seeing who might be interested in doing something like this one weekend.

A Trip to the Theatre

If your colleagues aren’t adrenaline junkies or particularly keen on spending time outdoors, why not suggest going to see a play or musical at your local theatre? This activity can be done either at the weekend or one evening during the week, and you could all grab a bite to eat before or after the show if you wanted to as well. Again, there are always cheaper tickets available for those who are on a tighter budget, but it’s a fun night out for a small or large group.

Bring in Tasty Treats to the Office

Everyone likes to indulge a little in sweet or savory treats, especially as a little pick-me-up during their work day. This is a very simple way to start bonding with your colleagues better, particularly if you’re new to the office. You can choose to bring in homemade treats if you’re fond of baking or choose to visit a local bakery or deli to pick up some of your colleagues’ favorite foodie treats.

Celebrate Birthday’s and Other Special Occasions

It’s always nice to be made to feel special on your birthday, and when you’re colleagues make an effort, it also makes you feel like a valued member of the team. Bringing in a cake and getting everyone to sign a card, and even chipping in for some flowers or another present, is a brilliant way to boost team spirit and help everyone bond. You can also do this for other occasions, such as when someone has got a promotion, has got engaged, or has welcomed a new baby into their family. This will make everyone feel appreciated and seen by other members of their team and give morale a little boost. Besides, who doesn’t love an excuse to eat cake?

It’s important to feel comfortable at work and supported by the people you work with. This will only happen if efforts are made to bond with colleagues and try to have a better working and personal relationship with them. If you want to boost morale in the workplace and start having more fun with your colleagues, consider the suggestions above and see which ones work for your team.
